Actually, the bar is a two-piece unit that comes apart in the centre... held together by a bolt and nut IIRC. I've stripped a few of those road bikes at the co-op and save the bars. They're heavy but I ran my 5 speed hub and grip-shift on a set of those bars for a while, but I rarely ride on the tops of the bars so I wasn't too keen on it. Unfortunately I donated it back to the co-op but it's a crappy tire favourite so they are out there in numbers.
