Just a very quick fix if you're not far from home, make sure it's in thinner strips, wrap it around the link that is broken and you can nurse it home. just make sure there is a hole for the cog teeth. no shifting though, had to use this method last month and it worked. It works, but it isn't always reliable, but it is helpful though if you don't have any spare links on you.
