In order for this to work, the bike has to have horizontal dropouts. If it's doesn't have brakes, you'll need to install them too! I would skip this project because it sounds costly and expensive. If you type in "Sturmey Archer" on Ebay, you'll see inexpensive (new/used) 3 speed bikes for sale.
