I guess I'm coming into this thread pretty late. Most observations, as based on the info/pics, seem correct (ex. the original CN6700 was too short; something was being done incorrectly...)
If components were all 7900 series being used with X10SL, there will be no problem. KMC's main business is chains which allows lots (lots!) of time for R&D. X10 (any level: SL, EL, L, or no weight reduction) is compatible across the board: any and all 10 speed systems.
