+1 I think you are ignoring the bio mechanical part ot the equation. For the same level of effort I easily average 2-3 mph more on my road bike (which does not have an exteme position...seat and stem are pretty much level) than I do on my upgright commuter. Some of this is aero dynamics, but a lot is the position in terms of muscle use. And I am not going that fast (clyde and out of shape)
