1000 would be for a non sprinter. Cipollini has a max in a sprint of something like 1900 watts. The bigger factor is power to weight in climbing. If you can put out 300 watts at 120lbs you're better off than 400 at 175 lbs. Then you could also move into the track cyclists who don't have to conserve energy over long distance or go up hills so they tend to be larger and more powerful. Marty Nothstien can put out something like 2200 watts, but he's a big boy.
