A friend of a friend commented on a picture of this bike I posted on face book. She was the owner of this frame before Ryan who was the owner before me. This frame was given to her by Dan Birkholz. At first I had no idea who this was but after a little googling I learned quite a bit. He was a local cycling legend in Laramie, WY. Raced competitively until '87 and later coached and administered the U.S. Cycling Federation at the Olympic Training Center. He died in 1991 in a plane crash near the cycling headquarters in Colorado Springs.
Quoted from the friend and I's messagigng this morning-
"Danny was a local legend, a very good cyclist, a crazy bastard, a patient coach... He built the original bike for me out of spare parts lying around at the OTC in Colorado Springs. The last time I rode it was in one of the Dead Dog Classics (I can't remember what year.) Danny rode down to Mexico on his bike, had all of his stuff stolen off the beach (bike, clothes, money, everything) and scraped together enough money to buy an old one speed clunker (named Hugo) and rode it back to Laramie."
The Dead Dog Classic is still ran in Laramie and is held in Danny's honor. The story behind it's name is pretty interesting in it's own right.
