Bikes: 1949 Raleigh Sports (keeping original), 1946 Raleigh Sports (too tatty, will be updated)

It seems generally accepted that the Raleighs are overgeared. I know for sure that top gear feels really high, I can't imagine a time when I'd ever get into it on my usual commute. I also have a Dutch bike with a Shimano 7-speed (similar weight to the Sports), and there are parts of my commute where I struggle even in 1st. Having said that, I'm quite prepared to chop and change to get the right compromise. I'll probably order a 20T and a 22T to make the comparison. Regarding servicing, I believe it was serviced just before I bought the bike, but once I'm finished with the clean-up, I'll take it to my LBS for a once-over.

Regarding the keys, whilst I can just about see the remnants of a lock number on the barrel, I can't make either of the digits out. Any tips on making it more visible?
