@briwasson, I'll need to measure the head tube length. Yes, 1" quill stem. There apparently was a threaded 1-1/8 Santana fork before the 1-1/4 threadless (I recently tried to buy one on ebay, but it was sniped at the last second). I was told be the seller of the bike it is a "medium/small" so I fear you may be correct that the steerer tube may be too short. I'll measure tonight and send you a PM.

Thanks for the brake suggestion also. Seems that the consensus is dump the current setup and I see why it makes sense. I don't see us taking the drum off, there is no escaping hills where we live. Even my little 5 mile one-way commute to work has an 860 foot climb.
