Been doing my own mechanic since im 15 y/o (all the way from frame prep to wheelbuilding and tubular fixing) and raced for 12 years... never a regular week end rider will ride as aggressively as a racer and i have raced in darn roads that looks like the paris roubaix's ones with holes everywhere. Never dropped chain even in the 2 seasons of CX back in the day, neither inside nor outside the crankset, and the last one is really because the bike needs maintanance. Dunno man... many riders, specially the ones that bought their 1st descent bike in the last 5 years beside knowing that a bike has two wheels and that they have to use a helmet, they know too little of mechanics or even know when something is wrong or looks odd... second issue, maybe like 1/3 of the mechanics population don't know crap and they get paid for it or maybe they just dont care for the clients and their machines.
This one and the wobbling front wheel are one of the biggest mysteries to me because i never had any of those two common problems, is not that i known everything either ok?
Well, I have been riding bikes for a long time too. And I can tell you I have dropped my chain exactly once, on my Cannondale aluminum mountain bike, but luckily, I have been using chain catchers on my frames for a long time. I can induce a chain drop on my carbon road frame when wiping down my chain post ride by just spinning the cranks at a very high cadence while pinching the chain between with a rag.
