Yep and that is the Adder. A Rare and protected species and it is rare. UNLESS you ride in some of the MTB forests and you can see them sunning themselves on the Forest roads. I normally see a couple a year and one of my riding mates got closer than that when one launched itself at his foot as rode over it. No strike but we stopped shortly after to find blood on the underside of his pedal.

And incidentally- there are NO snakes in Ireland.
