What's this fixation with going fast on a bike?

I find it's the beginners who for some reason feel like they need to be going fast all the time.

The experienced cyclist is able to ride at any speed, depending on the group. If you want to hammer, go out by yourself or with a fast group. Not every ride has to be a workout. Even when I was actively racing, I still spent one or two days each week "bike walking," really easy recovery. These are the days where your body is given the chance to build itself up (and become even stronger) after the heavy loads you've placed on it during the hard days.
