If one were to be concerned about the cleanliness of the shot blocks stuck to a top tube, imagine the nozzles on your water bottles that spend their time festering in the e-coli laden wind, picking up all that spinning wheel debris with a fresh sheen of saliva coating for the whole race-- mmm.
Actually, maybe that pepto mix isn't such a bad idea.
Shot block is a petri dish. Literally. A nice, sticky petri dish. With a lot of surface area.
I don't know how you handle your bottles but I don't lick them, and I wipe/squirt my nozzles clean when I switch them over from front to rear.
