Check the city code where you are at, and if yours is one of the growing number of cities trying to be "bike friendly", you may find an ally in city hall.
but i don't want a bike rack. there's just no way i'm leaving a $2,000 bike unattended outside. my HR manager worked out a perfect solution for me - a locked, seldom-used basement storage room. all parties satisfied.
