Not LESS. FEWER. Less refers to collective nouns such as sand. Fewer is preferred for plural nouns, such as, well, gears.

I am one of those big chain ring riders. I use all the gears in the back, but I don't need thirty gazillion of them. 6 or 7 suffice. I use the smaller chain rings only as granny gears when climbing steeper hills.
