I would hesitate to take that bike for free considering the work it needs. Besides lots of elbow grease it needs new (or good used) tires, new bar tape, new cables, replacement chain, and new brake pads. Even then I would feel bad even pricing it at $75 and keep looking over my shoulder waiting for Kharma to strike me down.
You should be able to do much better for $50. I found that mytenspeeds.com has a lot of good advice.
