Yes, and "back in the day" we drove cars with 3-speed manual transmissions with unsynchronized first gears, no power steering, drum brakes, no air conditioning, had to do a complete tune up every 10,000 miles and engine overhauls at 50,000 miles. Should we go back to that too?

New and improved isn't always improved but current bicycle drivetrains are vastly better than "back in the day". If we are spoiled by them, good.
