Avid V-brakes have no barrel adjusters and taking out the cable slack at the fixing bolt is the only way they adjust. Nashbar does sell in-line cable adjusters suitable for use with both shift and brake cables and these can act as barrel adjusters. I have the Nashbar adjusters on my SD-7's and they work well.
