Funny you should ask because I was just today talking with my friend and owner/maker of LoGo Trikes (
www.logotrikes.com) about the very same thing. He and his wife took a trike on a world marketing trip and apparently just rolled up a the airport with the trike without a box and only had to let the tyres down. No damage and they took it as it was because it didn't break down to a smaller size. He said he did wrap a towel around the chainrings to protect them and the airline people and away it went - no problems.
I don't think there is any
one way to do it, it just depends on the airline.
Might be worth a try though.
