The ratio of ring sizes is still pretty pronounced.

53/39 = 1.36

52/36 = 1.44

50/34 = 1.47

The practical effect is that there's less common ground between the two rings and more compensation shifts in the rear when I do make a front shift. I'd prefer standard, and if getting up the mountains isn't easy enough, I'd look first at wider-range cassettes if it wasn't just a lack of training.
