Broken spokes are no big deal!

I am big and I ride 150+ miles a week. I've broken dozens of spokes over the last 25 years. That is on at least seven different bikes and at least 10 wheel sets. I have ridden both road bikes and mountain bikes many miles on rough roads and even rougher terrain with one and sometimes two broken spokes. I have never had a wheel fail while riding.

I break spokes on some of my bikes on a regular basis and just replace them as needed. If a wheel starts breaking spokes regularly I untension and then retension and true them all.

Learn to install new spokes and how to re-tension and true your wheels. I am no expert at wheel building and don't indulge in the exotic nuances of wheels and spokes but I trust my wheels and take them on long distance solo rides in very remote areas.

Having said all the above - I have a set of Mavic Krysiums that I bought new and the shop re-tensioned and trued after about 1000 miles. I now have over 10,000 rough miles on those wheels and they are still true with no broken spokes. So, I suppose there is a lot to be said for using a pro to setup your wheels.
