If it was deliberate, one possible reason is that thorn-resistant tubes resist pinch flats very effectively compared to standard or lightweight tubes. Can't tell you how many times I've sold TR tubes to the parent of kids who keep pinch-flatting their BMX/freestyle/dirt-jumper/urban bike.
