I have not taken first aid since I was a lifeguard in the 90's and was just looking into some of it last week and I too am surprised at how much it's changed as Machka has said. Back then knowing what I knew I would definitely not have pulled some one off the road if there were others around to stop traffic. Traffic can almost always be stopped but correcting a spinal injury due to pulling some one off the road can not always be healed. In fact the only time we were taught to move some one was if they were in the water or in a burning building or something like that, always the very last option. Unfortunately difficulty breathing is a definite indicator of a spinal injury that may have caused paralysis to the breathing muscles. Could also mean he just had the wind knocked out. I hope the guy is ok.
