I've done 6 Adventurecorps events there, and was a moto-marshall for the recent Spring Century & Double.
The winds were pretty nasty at Hell's Gate Hundred last month, and it was the first century I've ever not finished. There were sustained 50mph winds with gusts much higher than that, and only six guys finished, including jmX from the SoCal forum (wearing swim goggles and a surgical-style mask.

)
It was pretty hilarious & memorable. I got gusted off the road, and I every time I lifted my leg to get back on the bike, my STEEL bike would fly up! I tried holding down the bars & top-tube, but finally had to visually check for traffic (no way you can hear an approaching car when the wind is shrieking like that), aim the bike into the wind (perpendicular to the road) and start off wobbly into the wind.
I was mashing DOWN a sustained 8% grade in my 39-27, with my forehead on my stem, and was barely able to maintain 9mph. In Death Valley, finishing is less an objective than Adventure; hence the name.
