the awful thing about all this lies in the great weight of past exposure, especially that absorbed as very young people. my grandfather acquired a bad melanoma late in life, not due to recent exposure, but through working on the farm as a youngster. i spoke to a dermatologist about this a few years ago, and he echoed this phenomenon. that's no reason to give up sunscreen late in life, but it is a good reason to advise your kids.
