Free Schwinn Continental.. Upgrade?

For about a week or two I was looking all over (craigslist, newspaper, bike shops) for a decent road bike I could get as a beginner. Wasnt finding much for under $300, but today my uncle heard that I was looking for a bike, and told me he had an old bike in his garage that his son left and wanted to get rid of it. So I came home today with a free Schwinn Continental . I was wondering what other things I should do to this bike? I know it's nothing good, but I want to keep it and use it regularly until I find something good on craigslist. For how old it is, it seems to be in good shape, and everything works except I need to buy a new brake line and attach the right brake lever and it will be good too go. Also, the grip seems a bit worn out and torn, so I will replace that. The seat also seems too stiff but I guess after a few rides I will find out and buy a new one if it isnt comfortable...

So please help me out and tell me what else should I do too the bike!

Thank you!
