John, that's the not the case here. They're two separate posts. I don't know how much riding or walking that our local Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coordinator actually does. I've asked them how much riding they do, but have never gotten an answer.
Personally, I think that anyone who works in the capacity of "Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coordinator" SHOULD be required to walk/ride a bicycle for transportation a majority of the time. Otherwise how are they to know what challenges the person who walks and/or rides a bike faces?
And again, John, how do we educate someone who by their job title should be putting the safety of Cyclists & Pedestrians first but doesn't want to acknowledge that things like door zone bike lanes and/or combination through/right turn lanes are a danger to cyclists.
As I've said a friend of mine who is a certified Cycling Savvy instructor has asked her to attend his course and she hasn't taken him up on his offer. And as I said his next step is going to be to offer to both the local Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coordinator but the mayor as well to attend for free.
Regarding formal training for a bicycle transportation post, I have been very impressed by the course that Dan Gutierrez has been creating for California Dept. of Transportation. I have not attended, but I have been reading and viewing the course materials as Dan has presented them in various discussions. Of course, these materials make specific reference to California traffic laws, but these are not so much different from many in the nation that I think much would be transferable. I do not know Dan's view of the future for his work, or, for that matter, just who owns it.
