Interesting experiment. Do you have a decent light? If so, go out to a dark site and take a pic with those settings and see how the pic compares to your visual assessment. The eye is extremely non-linear in it's response to brightness.
Agree completely - your eyes have a dynamic range response that's logarithmic, while the dynamic range in a camera is linear. So there needs to be some trade-offs. HDR is one option, but I can't see overexposed photos being any advantage unless some other normalized baseline is also available as a reference. A series of photos taken at progressively different shutter speeds can be used to highlight lens artifacts or uneven light distribution caused by a reflector, but should be a supplement to some baseline photo that would be indicative of what to expect when actually using any particular light.
Four seconds (MTBR exposure time) at fifteen feet per second (bicycle speed) is 60 feet and either i can see that far ahead ... or I can't!
