If this is something that you think you'd enjoy doing, there's a good chance that you'll do enough of your own maintenance and repairs to more than pay for the tooling up. Honestly, if you are judicious about what you buy, you really don't have to spend much money do perform most maintenance jobs.
If you don't enjoy doing it, you'll always be able to find an excuse to outsource the maintenance and whatever you have spent on tools will be lost.
