So basically what the mechanic handed me is along the lines of what I should use. He mentioned thinner versions exist of this spacer, but that he didn't have any at the moment.

Seems odd the IS42 cone spacer didn't "just work", there must be something special about the factory supplied Specialized cone spacers.
