Can anybody tell me how to get the freewheel off?
Is it a freehub with the smallest cog threaded on super tight?
Or is the guy right and this is some kind of pressed-on disposable thing?

I'd like to try to replace the spokes myself and begin my journey down the road of learning how to true a wheel and maybe end up with a usable spare.
Geez! Kids these days...

That's a SunTour PowerFlo cassette hub, from the mid/late '80's. The cassette comes off by removing the smallest cog, which requires two chain whips. Pictures here: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-...ewheel-removal - scroll most of the way down, under "Older Cassette Hubs (non-lockring ring type freehubs)".

IMO, if a couple spokes have broken, several others have fatigued and will likely break once you start using the wheel again. The wheel is a good candidate for replacing all the spokes, but wheelbuilding is a great skill to have. (Addictive, too. I've been building wheels for 30 years. I get twitchy if I don't build a couple every year.)
