I've seen numerous threads on taking a bike on a plane and the best solution seems to be a special hard sided case. The downside is the disassembly and reassembly plus the cost of the case. I don't have money for frequent trips, but if I wanted to take a bike infrequently (once every couple years), what's the best solution? Box and ship from an LBS? Box and take on plane (how safe is that?)? Or fork over for the case because they are that good?
