I was searching for a old road bike in nice condition for doing some community charity fundraiser type rides, until now I have only owned mountain bikes and its hard to keep up with my road/comfort/recumbent bike buddies. When my father in law heard about my search he told me that he had an old bike thats like brand new and was about to put it in the n'hood garage sales.
It turned out to be a showroom new 1988 Schwinn Caliente with only 6.1 miles showing on the old mechanical odometer. My father in law thinks that the odometer is correct to the mileage of the bike and the tires seem to confirm this since they still have the litte whiskers on them. The tires are hard as plastic although they did hold air and I rode the bike a little. This bike literally has been hanging in the same spot from a garage ceiling for 25 years untouched. Its showroom new.
My question is should I modify the bike to be what I want or leave it original because its in such nice shape? I want to change the seat, wrap new grips in place of the foam and I am going to have to at least change the tires and tubes.
Should i get the same tires and tubes or something a step up? Should I leave the foam grips or wrap them? Whats your favorite wrap? Whats a comfy and cheap saddle that I should try?
I know this bike will probably never be a super desirable vintage bike as it was a lower end bike even when new but I kinda feel bad about changing things since it is so showroom new. The other side of me says I wont be selling it anytime soon so make it what I want. What do you all think? Pictures linked below.
