to be fair, I also have similar issue with automobiles who prioritize fashion over practical function and safety (see SUVs)
The disregard for the laws is part of the hipster culture, at least that how it seems to be in NYC. It must be the "stick it to the man" thing or something, except they cause damage to cycling in general, but they don't care.

Also, what pisses me off is when I coast down the bridge I have to watch out for wobbling fixters trying to keep their bike under control. I had few close ones with those characters.
