Sir, guys of our weight need custom wheels, at least the rear, especially when you're talking narrow rims. You can slow down the failure rate by going to a wider tire @ less pressure for a softer ride, but most bikes with rims like yours don't have brake or frame room for bigger tires.
Most of your weight is on the rear wheel.
Most bikes with rims like yours are designed for 150-165lb riders.
The last failed wheel I've had is a 26 (559)x25mm at 908.8miles. I'm riding a spare wheel while I arrange a rebuild.
I suggest a 36hole hub minimum. About $260ish should get you a custom wheel with an entry grade shimano hub (or just use your hub) & a hellaciously strong Velocity rim from
Peter White. (Extremely grumpy sometimes). He has a great deal of experience with
bicycle &
wheel weight capacity. Make sure you read the "
wheel rant" section.
I do not ride the same bike everyday but I do ride a wide variety of wheel types everything from 36 and 32 spoke clinchers both bought and custome built, 36 and 32 spoke tubulars with HF hubs and radial laced fronts and I have very little trouble with any of my wheels. I ride a 59cm frame and much as I am loath to admit it at 5' 11" I am a.... a..., oh whats that cute name they for us girls in that other thread? Anyway IMHO both from personal and past professional experience road surface and riding style has more to do with wheels durability the rider weight. I have seen little guys with more wheel problems than you can shake a stick at a big guys with never a problem.
I think perhaps had a PM been done this bike from time to time the OP may seen the crack sooner.
