Thanks all. I think I'll just go with the black. I imagine they are the same compound (minus dye). I'll also try your hill method, old's'cool. If that doesn't work, I'll probably just take a super fine file to them, shave off a bit.

Either way, they need to be changed though. 40 year old pads aren't too promising in the whole "these could save your life" department.
