I'm not so sure.
When buying anything used, its up to the buyer to determine suitability/condition/value and negotiate price downward if need be. You're assuming the seller even knew what was up. Maybe not. If she wasn't qualified to judge, it sounds like she should have taken you when she purchased it.

On bikes I have looked at it seems about one out of five has serious problems that the owners seem legitemetly clueless about.
