I read a report on some lab tests awhile back where a lubricated chain was no faster than a dry chain. Given that lube collects grit, I'd love to be able to go lube free and just replace the chain more often if that was needed. Unfortunately, the lab test had the chain in a straight line (motorcycle oriented), and we cyclists aren't lined up that much. I have, however, taken to cleaning as much of the oil as possible off the chain when I lube, using a terry-cloth rag. To keep the drivetrain quiet, I need to lube once or twice a week (every 100 miles or so), and I clean the entire drivetrain with Simple Green about once a month (500-800 miles).
I lubr the chain about at the same frequency you do, but I clean it about twice as often. I can always feel the drive train runs better after a cleaning. You may think me crazy. As Hermes said - I don't worry about cross chaining, I'd rather stay in the big ring as long as possible, it is more efficient. I climb short hills in the big ring when I can as well. I use a compact and I only drop into the low ring for extended climbs.
