Yeah you need to do some reading. Read "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" book by Andrew Coggan.
FYI. Less than a 1000w 5s is extremely poor, especially if you are more than 140lb. (Don't worry, my max 5s is just below 1000w too.) The important numbers to keep in mind are 5s, 1min, 5min, 20min. You also might want to invest in WKO+ Training Peaks or download Golden Cheetah.
