I've been using panniers for years and I'm considering using a backpack, but my pack isn't waterproof, so I'm looking at options. I ride about 18kms each way (~40-50 minute commute depending on direction) and I don't know how comfortable/uncomfortable one of these would be for 40 minutes.
I prefer not to have anything on my back, but if that is what you are after and you are concerned about having something that is waterproof, keep in mind that you could use your backpack if you put things into a garbage bag first and then put that in the backpack (or messenger bag for that matter). Cheap, versatile and effective.
