I would have been on the sidewalk but it was after dusk, so there would be risk of hitting pedestrians or potholes I didn't see. Also, the sidewalks here are much worse than the streets.

I'd keep doing whatever is safest, for you and those around you. If this is the first guy to beep at you, I'd just chalk it up to possessiveness of the road. As long as the road gives both you and the driver plenty of clearance, I'd say you're most likely fine. I wouldn't, however, make riding one ways in the wrong direction. Your local one way is one thing, always doing it is another. You are bound to get caught up one time or another.
