Yes, I did mess with the chain line and one thing I didn't mention, and thanks for reminding me, is that I tend to also get a wider BB spindle. The chainline is indeed a compromise. And on the Clyde forum, I've posted this technique to boost lateral wheel stability on several occasions. There, I've mentioned that I adjust chainline by usually getting a BB spindle that shifts the drive side out the same amount as the rear hub. For symmetric BB spindles, that means getting one wider by double the offset increase. This increases Q factor a little, and also reduces ground clearance during cornering, but it can increase comfort for bigger riders who need wider Q and brings chainline back to spec.
