Especially given the OP's situation I would think a steel chainring is a great idea. Weight difference, especially on the granny, is not worth worrying about - certainly preferable to the annoyance of chain suck and the time and expense of replacing chainrings. Because of the added strength the steel ones are narrower, so less prone to chain suck in that way also.
