Simple fact: White gets dirty.

How many coats of shellac have you applied to the cotton? (I usually apply six or seven coats myself - basically, until there is clearly a protective coating.) Properly finished, dirt on shellac wrap should just wipe right off. Then, whenever the coating begins to look worn, just add another coat... should last for years. I think shellac wrap is marginally more comfortable than Velox, myself.
