Depending on where you live, it might just be easier to go with IGH. They're heavy, but fairly maintenance-free, and the gear range is adequate for most purposes, unless you live in a very hilly area, want to go very fast, or are carrying heavy loads. The best part of IGH is that they do not collect a lot of gunk in bad weather. Also, an IGH makes a single chain ring along with a chain guard that much easier to justify.
I have a derailleur system, and I actually really like it, but I clean and/or adjust my drive train every week; most people aren't willing to do this.
