I use the whole gear range, in town.. it is mostly on a hill, people drive
rather than walk up the hill, a few blocks, to their house,
My Apt is on the lower slope.

Sturmey Archer 3 & 5 speeds are nice, IG hubs with drum brakes
do both things well,
you can get a front one with a dynamo included
for lights that work all the time you are in motion.
