Ever notice that most of us still riding steel bikes are happy to call them merely "steel" and don't feel the need to define it's composition, such as chromium molybdenum or manganese molybdenum.
But when you ride a plastic bike it's important to call it by it's sexiest sounding ingredient.
Seems more like a matter of being able to effectively communicate. The industry calls it "carbon". If someone started talking about their plastic bike, I wouldn't know what the heck they meant.
