Dumb question about bearings in old Uniglide hub

I'm converting an old 10 speed to single-speed. It has a Shimano Uniglide freehub that is giving me fits getting the correct tightness to allow easy freewheeling without play along the axle. (Suggestions on this point welcomed).

The more pressing problem I'm trying to figure our is where on the freehub side the bearings should go.

When I first opened it up, the bearings were on both sides of the cone inside the freehub -- some under it, some outside around the spacer. Clearly, this was a problem but I can't see how nine 1/4" bearings will all fit under the cone, as the space is much narrower than the space around where the spacer would go.

I figure the bearings are mashed so I'm getting new ones, but I want to make sure I put them in the right place.

I'd be grateful is someone could point me to a cut-away of a Unigilde.
