Friction left bar end shifters are a fine way to use mountain bike cranks in road bar bikes.

IDK about a Pinned & ramped 44t, shifting a bike with friction bar ends for 20 years before,
the engineers dreamed up hyperglide features
it did not seem that crucial.. manual mode was always late shifting,
and then re center the FD so the chain does not scrape against the shift cage..
