Considering that they can find the leather for the Select line of saddles I'd say the latter.
Plus, they are now marketing their products as lifestyle accessories rather than simply cycling gear, which is usually a sign of reduced quality as a company moves to maximize profits and meet demand. The vast majority of people riding a few km to the coffee shop or bar wouldn't know the difference.
